Cookies used on this website

Here is a summary of how cookies are used in this website.

If you're not sure what a "cookie" is, see the HTTP Cookie entry on Wikipedia. There is a common misconception that cookies are only used to store personal or identifiable data. This website uses cookies for the most benign reasons, similar as in nearly all dynamic websites.

Cookies are used for the Browser to know that a page view is the same as in a previous page view. Further, it assures the best possible usability and performance in presenting this website.

As an example, the site settings and language values are loaded once per session and associated with the user to improve performance. The user is otherwise anonymous. When language drop-downs are used, the association enables the server to return pages in the same language as chosen in prior page views. Otherwise, the user would need to choose the language for every single page load. If a shopping cart and client response is used, the cart contents and feedback associated to the browser are kept on the server, providing continuity from one page view to the next.

None of this information is identifiable to the user, instead, all the stored cookie information is a unique identifier. The identifier and associated data isn't tracked to identifiable information and isn't saved beyond the lifetime of the session. Further, this cookie information is not shared outside of the system to The Turning Gate, or to any other third party and is not used to track the user from one site to another.

Another use for cookies is to identify log-ins. Without knowing that a page view came from the same browser that was logged in to client managed albums or the Backlight admin, there would be no way to maintain a login session.

Third-party Cookies: This website also uses Google Analytic and reCaptcha services. Further, the optional "Blog" section uses WordPress and WordPress plugins. It is likely that these software and services are creating additional cookies in the browsers. In many cases, these cookies are necessary for the software and services to function properly. Please note that these Third-Party cookies are created and handled separately from the native Backlight Turning Gate software. If a user takes issue with Third-Party cookies, for example Google's reCaptcha, then a user of this Website should NOT use this function.
